Aminopenicillin: Amoxicillin, Clavulanic Acid, Escherichia Coli, Haemophilus mnemonic

Amoxicillin [I am ox pen(icillin)]

An Aminopenicillin that binds to penicillin binding proteins
Used prophylactically during dental procedures on patients with artificial heart valves [heart with funky teeth and artificial valves at the beginning of both great arteries]
Oral administration [pen pointing in mouth]
Many strains of Escherichia coli [cherry colon] and Haemophilus [Heme/RBC lover] make beta-lactamase and can therefore degrade amoxicillin.
- This can be prevented by co-administration of beta-lactamase inhibitor such as clavulanic acid [See lava volcanic burn E.coli and Haemophilus]
Adverse effects:
- Urticaria, pruritus, fever, joint swelling
