Sulfa Drugs: Mafenide, Sulfadiazine, Pyrimethamine, Silver Sulfadiazine, Toxoplasmosis mnemonic

Sulfa drugs 2 [sulfur=yellow]

Mafenide [Mafia-knight, wearing a back suit and shades as well as a yellow tie (yellow associated with sulfur)]
- Inhibits folate synthesis
- Used topically to prevent colonization of wounds and burns [Mafia knight is holding a burning lighter]
Sulfadiazine [Chunk of sulfur reading two magazines]
- Competes with PABA for dihydropteroate synthase, preventing bacterial folate synthesis
- Used in treatment of infection with Nocardia asteroides
- May cause crystalluria and nephrotoxicity may ensue as a result [Stream of urine has crystals in it]
- Associated with kernicterus in newborn because the drug displaces bilirubin from albumin [yellow infant]
- Used in combination with pyrimethamine [Funerary pyre met a mine] as the only effective treatment for toxoplasmosis [T. gondii represented by Ghandi; note association with burning pyre]
- Silver sulfadiazine is used topically to prevent colonization of burns and wounds
